After you have contacted us, you will want to stay out of debt, so here a few simple tips to save money and help keep out of debt:
Cut up your credit and store cards!
If possible get rid of all of your credit cards and store cards, they will only encourage you to spend more money, and it's far too easy to let the owed amounts build up without realising it. Remember you aim to be debt free from now on!
Put temptation out of reach.
If you really can't do without a credit card Limit yourself to only one, credit cards with high interest rates make it far too easy to build up your debt problems. If you have to keep one, wrap it in a piece of newspaper (to stop you seeing and using the credit card number) put it in a tub of water and stick it in the freezer. Extreme? Maybe, but it will make you think hard about any impulse purchases you make in the future while you are standing there waiting for it to defrost…
Choose the right bank account.
Preferably you will only have a debit card account, which means you can only spend as much as there is in your account. Try and keep this account balance in the black, if you have an overdraft make sure it is only a small one, don't go for as much as the bank will let you have, be sensible.
Pay your bills automatically.
As soon as you can, put all of your bills onto direct debit, that way they can't start to mount up if you forget to pay them and they are paid in small amounts throughout the year, not one huge bill, you will also get used to them being paid like this and will hardly notice them going out of your account, no stress see?
Days and nights out.
Everyone needs to get out and enjoy themselves, you've got to be your own judge here, so keep yourself in check, don't go mad. There are plenty of things that you can go out and do that don't cost the earth.
Smoking and drinking
Need we really say more? Everyone knows that these are expensive habits, but once again calculate how much you spend on both and you'll soon want to stop. Look at the following figures: If you give up cigarettes (assuming a habit of 10 cigarettes a day), you could save: £14 a week, £56 a month, £728 a year (that's around £1,500 a year if you smoke 20 a day!) If you give up alcohol (assuming an average daily consumption of 6 units per day), you could save: £7.50 a Day, £52.50 a week, £210 a month or £2,520 a year. If you can't give up, then if at all possible cut down, it is better your both your health and for your bank balance.
Make a shopping list
Before you go out make a shopping list and stick to it, and avoid shopping when you are hungry as you tend to buy a lot more.
Pack your own lunch.
Go on try it, first of all take some lunch into work, don't buy it there, do you know how much extra you are paying? Set aside 5 minutes at home to do it yourself. With the money you save by making that little bit of effort, you will be able to afford to put £2 in a bottle every day, even if you did this on weekdays only by the end of the year you would have saved yourself £520, not bad sandwich money is it?
Little luxuries add up.
Magazines and newspapers, do you really need to buy them? Tot up how much you are spending on them at the moment, magazines are the most expensive, you could probably do without them or you could share with a friend.
Control your spending.
Try and maintain some self control over your spending, save as much as you can, you will start to feel a sense of achievement. You will soon find that your £10 has become £100 and so on. Regain your pride and self esteem and hold your head up high. Debt can be an immense weight on anyone's shoulders, affecting your life in all sorts of ways. You can prevent it happening again and regain control, it's time to start living your life again
Save some money when you can
Now you are on the road to recovery put a little bit of money away each week, no matter how small, once this becomes a regular habit you can increase the amount of money you save. You will find a great sense of satisfaction and achievement at being able to afford the little luxuries in life without having to borrow money to get them first. It never hurts to put a little away for a rainy day or emergencies. If an unexpected bill does arrive next time, you will be a little better prepared and a little less anxious.
